Pickeld things and the eye in London

Friday

I love the London tube system, it’s so easy so find your way around. Even with a problem on the line I was going to use I still found my way to the Natural History Museum without any trouble.

And, they have underground walkways from the stations to keep you out of the terrible weather.

But, they also have school holidays…… not the best time to go to the Natural History Museum – didn’t think that one through very well did I?

I was visiting for the building, not the contents, but I found some interesting displays as well as plenty of stunning architecture. Just goes to show you should always approach things with an open mind doesn’t it?

So, after a few hours  there I braved the wind and rain again and found my way to Westminster. Rather than go looking at the Abbey I walked across the bridge to Southbank for a ride on the London Eye.

As I crossed the bridge an old gentleman started playing the bagpipes, he was so cute in his kilt and special hat with an overcoat on because it was so cold. But I also felt sorry for him if he is busking in such terrible weather to make ends meet, or it would be nicer if he just loves performing and it makes him happy. Either way I gave him some pounds for the enjoyment he provided.

The line-up to buy tickets was longer than the line to go on the ride itself. I happened to be behind a family with a small boy in a wheelchair and in front of an older couple with their grandson so I’m not sure if they thought we were all together or not but we had the pod to ourselves. All the other pods had probably 12 to 15 people in them so we  felt rather priveleged and had a lovely time swanning around taking photos wherever and whenever we felt the urge.

The rain was only on and off and didn’t affect our views too badly, the company was fun and even though it’s a totally touristy ride I thoroughly enjoyed it.

London – at last

Wednesday 10th April 2013

I must be getting old, I really didn’t handle the flights very well at all this time. I had a middle seat in a row of three on the first leg so my sardine comment was very accurate. My aisle seat on the Dubai to London leg was great but by then I had a killer headache and nothing apart from strong painkillers and a good sleep was going to fix it.

Even though I felt like s#%t I was thrilled to be able to find my way to Natalia’s place in Leyton via the London Underground.

I always thought the “tube” was completely underground – but, no, it goes under and above ground.. There you go, that’s my piece of useless information for the day.

I also saw may first red double decker London bus from the tube and was all excited.    Then I saw another fifty and it wasn’t so exciting anymore but I would like to try and   sketch one.

Poor Natalia, I felt so bad, I was terrible company and could hardly keep my eyes open once I got here. I finally put her out of her misery and fell asleep after a couple of hours.

Gate 75 – again!!!

Tuesday 9th April 2013

I didn’t think I would be  off on my big adventure so soon but here I am at Gate 75 of the Brisbane International Airport again not quite 12 months after my very first overseas holiday.  I have a couple of hours stop in Dubai and should arrive in London about 25 hours after I leave.

I have been so busy these last couple of weeks that I don’t think it’s really set in that this is it – I won’t be home for over six months. Pretty exciting stuff.

I even had a send-off group tonight – I think some of them were only there so they’d rate a mention in the blog  (just joking)- so, here you go guys! Emma, Jay and their children, Nikola, Jemmya and Isaac  were here as well as Barry and Carolyxn, and Travis.  It was lovely to have them here for hugs before I, left I’m guessing hugs will be in short supply for a while now!

Anyhow,  I’m off to be like a sardine for fifteen hours – see you next on the other side of the world!

Lazy day in London

Thursday 11th April 2013

I feel like myself again, thank goodness. Slept until eight this morning and then for a bit longer after I got my phone problems sorted…. I decided not to go into the city though today, will start the touristy things tomorrow. Went for a long walk this arvo – I know, amazing isn’t it, then came back and stated my travel journal with a sketch of the terrace house roofs I can see from Natalia’s lounge-room.

Only took one photo today, and that was on my phone. Isn’t it funny how just the little things remind ou that you’re away from home – London’s letterboxes are much cuter than ours in Australia.

I didn’t realise at the time but I managed to capture a London bus (not very well though) in this pic too.

Hopefully tomorrow I’ll have more interesting news to share. See you then.
