Stressa on Lake Maggiore

We’re staying at Hotel La Palma, the pool is right on the lake-front and the hotel is across the road.

We had welcome drinks the first night up on the roof terrace of the hotel and the view when the lift doors opened just took everybody’s breath away – even the seasoned travellers said it was something really special. The rooftop itself was up with the best as well, very modern and quite luxurious.Welcome drinks was free wine and nibbles for about an hour and then the welcome dinner was 4 or 5 courses as well. I was fairly nervous being on my own but just talked to everyone and wasn’t left like a shag on a rock so that was good!!

Day 1 – Milan to Stressa on Lake Maggiore

Ruins next to La Palma

30th May 2012

I can hardly tell one day from the next at the moment, I have had such a wonderful time. Had a little outing just around the few blocks near the hotel in Milan before I met up with the tour group. Managed to buy water, coffee and a croissant using my Italian which was fun.

There are 30 I think in the group. There is an older gent travelling on his own, probably late 70’s, two women (aunt & niece) travelling together and the rest are couples in the 50 – 70 age bracket and then there is me! I am really pleased I am on my own now, I can hang with any number of people or I can please myself and do my own thing. They are all very keen to include everyone in everything.

Stressa seems a bit like a faded beauty to me, it seems like it was a very upmarket lakeside resort once but now maybe not so much. It was quite busy but lots of buildings seem to have seen better days. There was a property across the road from the hotel with three huge mansions all in massive disrepair, roofs falling in and all boarded up – I absolutely loved them and made heaps of pics. Went down town with the other two single women (Val and Dale) for lunch and a look around. It was so just what I was hoping it would be like, all little cobblestone laneways and bits and pieces all over. Stopped for a gelato on the way back and watched the world go by – it is like everyone goes out along the lakefront for their afternoon promenade. I am going to have to continue tomorrow as it’s almost midnight and we have a 6:30 wake-up call in the morning. Buonanotte!

So much in such a short time

Central Station Milan

29th – 30th May 2012

Well, I don’t quite know where to begin!! Bear with me, but I didn’t quite realise how much everything would be so different. I feel very naïve being this old and only just travelling overseas for the first time. I didn’t feel like shopping in Dubai – amazing I know but 15 or so hours on a plane will do that to you. I felt quite pleased with myself paying for lunch in dinars and knowing what to do to collect it with no trouble. There were young people having more trouble than I did – small things I know but I was chuffed.

Then I realised I didn’t have paperwork for a transfer from the airport at Milan to my hotel – panic set in for a while but I texted good old Sarah and asked her to look into it for me. By the time I got off the plane at Milan she had worked out I didn’t have one and should just catch the train to Central and the hotel would be close by. I ended up almost missing the plane in Dubai as I don’t think they call you like they do in Australia, was one of the last on, all adds to the excitement I suppose.

Anyhow got to Milan okay and took a shuttle bus from airport to Central for the same price as the train. All Jay’s words of wisdom about not talking to strange men went out the window when I got off the bus. There were all these guys there with little hand trolleys trying to carry everyone’s luggage and of course one of them targeted me. I figured he would probable sting me for money but he seemed to know where the hotel was so I said yes he could show me to my hotel.

Cost me 5 euros for a three-minute walk but he was a nice man and everyone has to earn a living somehow I guess.

I went for a walk this morning in the area near the hotel and the train station, and what a train station it is – so not like the one in Dalby! I even bought a coffee and brioche and stood at the counter like the locals to eat.

Meeting up with the tour group in a couple of hours so I shouldn’t get into too much strife between now and then.

Bye

At Gate 75

28th May 2012

At gate 75 with a few hundred others waiting for boarding. I had a lovely day with Emma and Isaac, lots of phone calls from Sarah and now time to just sit and relax. Jemmya was very busy this afternoon just as we were leaving for the airport and was in trouble for not coming out to say goodbye at the car. Turns out she was trying to finish a special Spirograph drawing for me as a present – she got it finished and it will be the first thing I put in my travel journal.

I had a little talk from Jay before I left about being careful and not trusting strange men! He gave me a St Christopher medal that my Mum and Dad had given him to keep me safe. Apparently it’s one they took on their trip in 1980. It was very sweet of him!

I’m sure there was something else I had planned to say but can’t think what it was now. Anyhow, will go now and check in again from Dubai or Milan!!!

Bye

Julie
